On the border with Umbria and Lazio there is a wonderful area of Tuscany, commonly defined “Lower Tuscany”, belonging to Siena district.
There are a lot of beautiful places to visit, almost all small villages. You can imagine an itinerary leaving from San Casciano dei Bagni with its therms in the wonderful Fonteverde Tuscan Resort & Spa, then go to Cetona, Montepulciano and Pienza.
There are many hotels and family farms to sleep, with a beautiful nature surrounding, for who wants to sleep near Cetona-on eof Italy’s most beautiful 100 villages- in the tract (10km) from Piazze (Cetona) and Cetona there is the Atelier Cetona, family farm, where the kind owner Irma held interesting painting’s classes.
or those who want a place of charme in the center, we recommend “La locanda di Cetona“, in the same building of the restaurant “da Nilo”.
Not to be missed San Francesco convent -from 1212- and the Santa Maria in Belvedere Church, a wonderful Church on two levels full of 300’s frescos, and immerged in a huge wood where in XIII century San Francesco went to pray; for this in 1367 they built an hermitage and a church. You can admire a beautiful view over Cetona from the road leading to the church.
There are many good restaurants everywhere in Tuscany; we recommend:
- “Nilo” in Cetona, (very good pasta, as pici with duck sauce, and the meat, in particular the guinea hen; wines are excellent, sangiovese or chianti)
- the Bottega de “le nane” in Piazze (tagliatelle are very good, and the handmade white ragù pici).
For who have more time we recommend to go to Aretino, in particular in the wonderful Cortona, one hour driving from Pienza.
