The Atahotel Capotaormina is located in the lower part of Taormina, on a promontory overlooking the sea and Naxos Gardens on the right and in the background the wonderful Etna, behind the upper part of Taormina and on the left Isola Bella, with a view even up to Calabria.
It is very big, almost 200 rooms, of which the cheapest costs more than 300 euros; the rooms are almost all very beautiful and spacious, of course I recommend the one with the sea view on Island Bella. They often grant upgrades. The mattresses are exceptional.
Breakfast is fabulous: in addition to all the usual dishes offered by the big hotels, there are a few delicacies (champagne, very popular between foreigners, in particular Russians, and brioche with granita and cream, typical local specialty). It is served in an amazing terrace overlooking Mount Etna (from where, in the evening, if you are lucky you can also admire the famous flows).
The beach (which you can reach via two lifts carved into the rock) is the highlight; the sea has a very clear water, there are rocks and stacks all around and Island Bella in front. The only flaw: being in the bay of Island Bella, the sun “goes away” around 13.30.
Beautiful swimming pool, which you can reach through a cave that starts from the beach. Here the sun stays up until sunset.
Near the pool there is the restaurant, a bar where you can order some snacks and excellent salads (also on the beach there is a bar) and the spa where Ayurvedic treatments are also possible. Beyond the pool, there is also a jacuzzi.
There is also a free bus service to Taormina (10 minutes), the last one however is “only” at 10.30 pm.
Not very suitable for families with small children.
A few sore points: it’s a bit dated and maybe it would require better maintenance, you have to pay for wifi and finally, in a room, you expect to find slippers and a bathrobe in a 4 stars hotel.
But the scenery is enchanting and Taormina is beautiful …
